GDC Marh organises plethora of activities on National Youth day

JAMMU, JANUARY 25: To commemorate National Youth Day, Red Ribbon Club, Government Degree College Marh, in collaboration with J&K AIDS Control Society (funding department), Jammu,  on Thursday organised awareness programme in the college premises under the aegis of Higher Education Department and guidance of Principal, Prof. Dr. Rakesh Kumar Koul.

While speaking on the occasion, the principal emphasized that the celebration holds great significance as it aims to share the thoughts and principles of Swami Vivekananda among the youth of India. He discussed with the students in detail about the leadership, empathy, courage, spiritualism of Swami Vivekananda and asked the students to get inspiration from him as only youth holds the power to change the society.

On the First day, Poster making competition on the theme “Ideas and teachings of Swami Vivekananda.” The students made posters related to the theme. The main aim was to inspire and motivate the youth to disseminate the ideas propagated by Swami Vivekananda to create a more promising future for the country.

An Essay writing competition on the theme “Arise, Awake and Realise the power you hold” was organised on the second day. As many as 20 students participated with zeal and enthusiasm. Vivek Sharma of BA SemVIth bagged first position; Khushi Rani of BA Sem IVthgot second position while third position was bagged by Sanjana Bhagat of VIth Sem. The consolation prize was given out to RitikaChoudhary of BA Sem VI.

An awareness lecture on the ideas and teachings of Swami Vivekananda was also organised in the college campus. The resource person for the event was Dr. Ashu Jolly (HOD Education). She gave a detailed review of life of Swami Vivekananda, his philosophy and a propagator of Vedanta philosophy. She highlighted the teachings of Swami for present day youth and his relevance in present day.

To create awareness on health, sanitation and nutrition, 25 students of the Red Ribbon club visited Anganwadi centre, Panchayat Dhateryal, Marh.

Principal of the college Dr. Rakesh Kumar Koul also visited the center and informed the students that the Anganwadi programme  is a part of Integrated Child Development Schemes (ICDS)/ Poshan Abhiyan.  “It provides supplementary nutrition, basic healthcare and pre-school education to children and  also extends to pregnant and lactating mothers” he informed. Different parameters such as weekly meal schedule for kids of the targeted age groups, adolescent girls, nursing mother, diet chart for pregnant ladies, supplements such as calcium, iron tablets, education standard were discussed by the students with the aganwadi sangini and sahayaka.

College students got firsthand experience of interaction with the kids. Prof. Imitaz Shahid (HOD Zoology), Madhavi Parasher (HOD Botany), Anjana Chib (HOD EVS), Dr. Sheetal Sharma (HOD Dogri) also accompanied the students during the visit.

Principal appreciated the efforts of Red Ribbon Club of college and highlighted the importance of initiatives taken by the college in creating awareness among the students  The programmes were organised by Prof.Anjana Chib (Convenor, Red Ribbon Club) and coordinated by Dr. Shakun Sharma(Co-Convenor, Red Ribbon Club). Refreshments were served to students. Participating students were also awarded with the certificate of Appreciation.
